Mr. Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and publisher has filed two fundamental rights actions at the Federal High Court, Abuja, against the Department of State Services, DSS, social media giants Meta, Facebook, and X Corp.
In a statement released by his legal team on Tuesday and signed by Barr. Tope Temokun, the lawsuits were filed to challenge what the lawyers described as ‘unconstitutional censorship’ against Sowore’s accounts maintained with Meta and X.
Barr. Temokun said that the lawsuit is about the survival of free speech in Nigeria.
Recall that the Department of State Service, DSS, filed Cybercrime charges against activist Omoyele Sowore and two others for allegedly making false posts against President Bola Tinubu to cause breakdown of law and order in the country.
The criminal charges filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja have X. Incorporation and Meta as two other defendants. In the 5-count criminal charges, Sowore was accused of using his official X handle page to commit an offence contrary to Section 24 of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024.
