The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has urged broadcasters to uphold professionalism and strictly adhere to the broadcasting code to maintain standards in the industry.
Mrs. Tari Daw-Ekene, the Acting State Officer of the NBC in Yenagoa, gave the advice when she led a delegation of the commission on a courtesy visit to the management and staff of Golden FM. She said professionalism helps broadcast stations distinguish themselves and earn the confidence of their audience, stressing that the NBC is committed to working with broadcasters to improve standards.
Mrs Daw-Ekene advised reporters and On-Air Personalities, OAP to familiarise themselves with the NBC Code, which, she said, guides the operations of the broadcast industry and is intended to promote growth rather than punish broadcasters.
On their part, Miss Lawson Perenabo and Mr. Victor Oboro, the commission’s monitoring officers, also cautioned presenters against the use of inciting language and statements capable of misleading listeners.
They further advised against airing songs containing vulgar expressions, promoting alcoholism, portraying women as sex objects, or encouraging cultism through music.
Responding, Mr Jacobson Park, the Acting Station Manager, thanked the NBC delegation for the visit, describing regular engagements and reminders as essential to the growth of the station. He pledged the station’s commitment to complying with the rules and regulations guiding broadcasting.
The NBC says its regulatory role is not to witch-hunt broadcasters, but to promote professionalism, uphold broadcasting standards and protect the interests of the audience.
