Renowned gospel singer and social commentator, Buchi Atuonwu, on Thursday expressed concern over the challenges facing Nigerian youths, stressing that wrong models and misplaced priorities have distorted their understanding of education, morality, and power.
Mr. Buchi who featured on Let’s Talk Nigeria, Golden FM’s morning programme, said not all young people have the capacity to rule the country, largely because of the faulty values being promoted in society. He noted that many youths no longer see learning as necessary, believing that passing examinations can be achieved through shortcuts.
“Learning has gone out of fashion. In our society today, people of questionable character are being honoured, while those who genuinely work hard are overlooked,” he said.
The “Mma Mma” corner further argued that the real holders of power are invisible, while politicians often exercise only cosmetic authority. According to him, the church remains one of the few institutions critically positioned to support society, as many churches run schools, libraries, and charity organizations that provide basic facilities for the poor.
On education, the singer maintained that primary education should be considered a right and not a political favour, emphasizing that it should be free for all children. He accused some educated elites of deliberately denying masses access to education in order to keep them subservient.
“There are educated people in our society who do not want others to be educated. They are deliberately starving a class of people of education, training them as foot soldiers for political purposes,” he warned, adding that criminals are not always out-of-school children but victims of systemic deprivation.
To address the growing social vices, the singer advised government and stakeholders to reintroduce scriptural and moral instruction, strengthen guidance and counselling in schools, and promote free secondary education.
He further suggested that cult groups should be formally registered, with someone held accountable for their actions, while non-cultists should be honoured and given societal recognition.
The Gospel singer warned that the failure of young people amounts to a disaster for the nation, calling for urgent reforms to protect the future of Nigerian youths.
