Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Seriake Dickson, has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dickson, a former Governor of Bayelsa State, made the announcement on Thursday during a press briefing at his residence in Abuja, citing deep-seated internal crises and divisions within the PDP as the reason for his decision.
He expressed concern over what he described as the declining state of the opposition party, noting that the PDP, which once inspired hope among its supporters, had become seriously weakened.
According to him, persistent leadership tussles and disagreements among party stakeholders have crippled the party and diminished its ability to effectively serve as a strong opposition platform in the country.
The senator also accused some PDP governors of working closely with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a development he said has further undermined the strength and unity of the party.
Dickson said the situation left him with no option but to pursue his political future on a different platform that aligns with his present political aspirations.
He described the NDC, recently registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as a party that could provide Nigerians with a credible alternative.
Following the announcement, Dickson was formally received into the NDC by the party’s leadership and presented with its official flag as well as a membership card bearing the number 001, signifying his position as one of the party’s founding members.
He also called on Nigerians to identify with and register under the new party in pursuit of what he described as a better Nigeria.
