The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed Dr. Peter Akpe as Deputy Governor–designate. Dr. Akpe, who until his nomination served as Chief of Staff at Government House, was approved during Tuesday’s plenary to succeed the late Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

The Assembly also confirmed Madam Joanah Gigi as Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development, following the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei, the former Commissioner, in December 2024.

After his confirmation, Dr. Peretubo-Akpe, a pastor and former Leader of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, was asked to take a bow and leave the Sacred Chamber, a privilege equally extended to Madam Gigi.

Speaking during plenary, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, the Speaker, described the Deputy Governor–designate as a friend of the legislature with a firm grasp of both legislative and executive procedures.

He referenced Section 191, Subsection 3 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which empowers the Governor to nominate a replacement for Deputy Governor, subject to the approval of the State House of Assembly. The Speaker urged the nominee to work closely with the Governor in delivering on the administration’s promises.

On his part, Rt. Hon. Michael Ogbere, the Deputy Speaker, congratulated the nominee and advised him to remain loyal and committed, while handling community matters with fairness and integrity.

Also speaking, Hon. Monday Bubou-Obolo, the Leader of the House, charged the nominee to build on his track record and provide sound advisory support on key state issues.

Meanwhile, the House passed the Bayelsa State Development and Investment Corporation Repeal Bill, 2026, for First Reading.
