A police officer, identified as Obot Godwin, was killed on Tuesday morning in the Amarata area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, while attempting to buy medicine.
Witnesses said the officer was robbed of his phone and pleaded with the assailants to return it before he was struck on the head, leading to his instant death.
Following the incident, policemen reportedly stormed the area around OMPADEC Street, breaking into homes, firing shots, and arresting residents indiscriminately. Schoolchildren and other residents were also tear-gassed, forcing families and traders to flee the community.
Residents expressed frustration that security agencies failed to act until Obot’s killing. Some locals alleged that even community leaders, including the area’s chief, were arrested during the raid.
The incident has fueled fears of further unrest in Yenagoa as residents remain uncertain about renewed police operations and possible reprisals.
Confirming the incident, Bayelsa State Police spokesperson Musa Mohammed described it as a serious matter, assuring that investigations were underway to track down the killers. He added that the situation was now calm, with police teams deployed to the area.
