The Senate has stepped down a motion seeking approval for President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, without offering an official explanation.
The motion, which was listed as the first item on Wednesday’s Order Paper, was deferred by lawmakers, delaying discussions on the prolonged political crisis in the state.
Sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the motion expressed concern over the rising tensions that have disrupted governance and hindered democratic dividends for residents of Rivers State. However, the debate was put on hold.
Speaking on the matter, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim explained that the postponement was to allow for broader participation among lawmakers before a vote is taken.
With the six-month suspension of democratic institutions in Rivers State, it is expected that aggrieved parties will have time to resolve their differences and restore peace to the state.
