The Bayelsa State House of Assembly, under the leadership of High Chief Abraham Ingobere, the Speaker, has successfully passed the second reading of a bill seeking to repeal the Bayelsa State Electricity Law 2023, now known as the Bayelsa State Electricity Bill 2025.
Leading the debate, Hon. Monday Bubou Obolo, House Leader and bill sponsor, emphasized that the bill aligns with the Fifth Alteration of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers state assemblies to regulate electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
He stated, that the proposed law would drive economic growth by ensuring a stable power supply, adding that Bayelsa must take advantage of the opportunity for development.
Other lawmakers, including Hon. Ben Selekaye Victor, Hon Tare Porri, Hon. Daniel Charles and Hon. George-Braa Oteigbanyo all supported the bill.
They all highlighted its potential to increase the state’s Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, create jobs, and boost small-scale businesses reliant on electricity.
Furthermore, the bill was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Power, and they are to report back in two weeks’ time.
