As reactions continue to trail the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Senate over her conduct within the chamber, some residents of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital have said the sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, should not be swept under the carpet.
They called for stronger commitment to addressing sexual harassment in politics and ensuring that women’s voices are not only heard in the hallowed chamber but actively supported.
Mr. Yagazie Obinwanne, a resident, described the situation between the Senate President and Senator Natasha as embarrassing to the nation, particularly the sexual harassment allegations.
Another resident, Mr. Success Igboekwere, faulted the conditions attached to the senator’s suspension and expressed disappointment in other female lawmakers for not standing in solidarity with Senator Natasha.
On his part, Mr. Aaron Chibuzor advised that women in politics should learn to separate emotions from official duties.
