Madam Gill Lever, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Abuja has said there has been notable progress in security in Bayelsa State. Madam Lever stated this on Thursday when she featured as guest on Let’s Talk Nigeria, Golden 97.5 FM’s morning programme.

She noted that her visit to the state was a testament to the improved security situation, stressing that she would not have travelled to Bayelsa if there had been no progress.

The deputy high commissioner is in the state to engage with stakeholders and oversee the implementation of the “Brighter Future” programme, a partnership between the United Kingdom and the Bayelsa State Government.

According to her, the initiative is designed to prevent vulnerable persons from turning to crime by providing targeted support and capacity building. She explained that the programme would involve training for law enforcement agencies and community members, as well as skills acquisition for over 200 residents to enhance self-sufficiency.

Madam Lever said Nigeria is endowed with immense talent, much of which remains untapped. She urged young people to pursue education and take advantage of available opportunities, while also calling on the government to create and expand access to educational opportunities for the youth.

In support of education, she disclosed that the United Kingdom is offering scholarships to outstanding Nigerians, with details available on its official social media platforms, and urged interested Bayelsans to apply.

She also advocated greater political support for women, noting that increased female participation in politics would bring diverse perspectives to governance and societal development. Reported by
