President Bola Tinubu has formally decorated Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police at a ceremony held at the State House in Abuja.
The event took place at about 4 p.m. inside the President’s office, with top government officials in attendance. Among them were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; and the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The decoration follows Disu’s appointment, which comes just 48 days before his expected retirement on April 13, 2026, when he would have attained the mandatory retirement age of 60.
However, the amended Police Act provides a four-year tenure for an Inspector-General of Police, regardless of age. This means Disu could remain in office until 2030.
President Tinubu, who personally pinned the new rank on Disu’s uniform, also praised the former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, for his service to the country.
The ceremony comes a day after Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter to the President, citing family matters that require his full attention.
