Senator John Azuta-Mbata, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has appealed to the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), so he can access proper medical care.
In a video message sent to journalists on Thursday, Azuta-Mbata said the continued detention of Kanu serves no meaningful purpose and urged the government to adopt a political solution to the lingering issue.
He stressed that beyond Kanu’s case, Igbos must not lose focus on their civic responsibility, calling on them to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards during the ongoing exercise.
According to him, the participation of Igbos in elections is key to their political relevance, just as the release of Kanu is critical to ensuring justice and peace.
Kanu, who has been in custody of the Department of State Services since his arrest in Kenya in June 2021, faces charges of treasonable felony. His detention remains one of the country’s most debated political and security matters.
Azuta-Mbata maintained that allowing Kanu to access treatment would demonstrate the government’s commitment to fairness, while ending what he described as needless tension.
