NIMET ISSUES FLOOD ALERT FOR 20 STATES, INCLUDING BAYELSA

Bayelsa State is one of 20 states the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet has placed on flood alert for July 2025, warning of possible flash floods due to ongoing rainfall patterns across the country.

NiMet has also listed Rivers, Lagos, Edo, Benue, Sokoto, Delta, and Akwa Ibom among states at high risk of flooding in July.

Residents of these states are urged to take safety measures, including clearing drainage systems, turning off electricity during floods, preparing emergency kits, and relocating if needed.

This alert comes amid growing criticism from environmental health groups, climate researchers, and town planners, who accuse several states of mismanaging over 620 billion naira in ecological funds.

The Africa Environmental Health Organisation and other stakeholders are demanding stricter monitoring, warning that many flood-prone areas remain ill-prepared and highly vulnerable.
