Dr Peter Akpe, the newly sworn-in Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, has pledged to serve with humility, accountability and a strong sense of collective responsibility, declaring that his office is a call to service rather than a platform for personal glory.
Akpe made the pledge during a reception held at the D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall shortly after his swearing-in at the Government House, Yenagoa.
Addressing political leaders, clerics, family members and supporters from within and outside the state, the deputy governor said leadership must be guided by faith, transparency and genuine commitment to the welfare of the people. He stressed that public office should not be seen as a reward, but as a trust that requires sacrifice, discipline and openness to advice.
He urged Christians and residents of the state to remain steadfast in prayer and constructive engagement, noting that effective governance thrives on unity between leaders and the governed.
The Ebedebiri-Sagbama-born politician, who was accompanied by his wife, Dr Favour Akpe, said he did not lobby for the position, describing his emergence as an act of God.
Akpe expressed appreciation to Governor Douye Diri, members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and other stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him, promising to contribute meaningfully to the administration’s development agenda.
He assured residents that he would support policies aimed at improving livelihoods and strengthening state institutions, adding that the goodwill shown to him since his appointment underscores the high expectations of the people.
Chairman of the occasion and former Deputy Governor of the state, retired Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah, commended Governor Douye Diri for what he described as a timely and prudent choice in appointing Akpe.
In separate goodwill messages, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, and the member representing Ogbia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Mitema Obordor, congratulated the deputy governor on behalf of the people of Bayelsa Central and Bayelsa East senatorial districts.
Also speaking, a former Deputy Governor, Chief Peremoboere Ebebi, representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, said Akpe’s rise in public service was not surprising, citing his competence and capacity.
