The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it has secretly banned the sale and use of Amoxicillin in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 9, 2026, and signed by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC described the claim spread through a viral video as false and misleading, stressing that Amoxicillin has not been banned in the country, either covertly or officially.
NAFDAC explained that as a responsible regulatory body, any action affecting pharmaceutical products is always communicated openly to the public through its official channels. These include product recalls, safety alerts, blacklists, and other regulatory notices published to inform healthcare providers and consumers.
According to the Agency, such safety communications clearly specify affected product names, batch numbers, manufacturers, and the regulatory steps required. Where necessary, blacklisting is applied to prohibit specific companies or products due to safety risks, regulatory breaches, or unethical practices.
NAFDAC clarified that while Amoxicillin has not been banned, it has issued targeted safety alerts in recent months concerning specific brands and batches of the drug found to be substandard.
