The International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, observed every 23rd of May has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for preventive care, timely medical intervention, and support for women living with the condition.

In observance of the day, medical expert has emphasised the realities of obstetric fistula while urging greater awareness and preventive action.

Dr. Egejuru Julia, a medical doctor at Bayelsa Medical University in Yenagoa, described obstetric fistula as a serious childbirth injury caused by prolonged and obstructed labor without prompt medical attention.

Also, Dr. Fab-Emerenini Eziokwu, a Medical Officer at the Nigerian Air Force Base Clinic in Yenagoa, explained that the condition is often easy to identify as some common symptoms include a persistent smell of urine or faeces, and in some cases, psychiatric symptoms that may require psychotherapy.

He also emphasized the importance of a proactive approach to maternal health, which includes regular antenatal care, access to skilled healthcare workers during delivery, and the availability of emergency obstetric services.

The International Day to End Obstetric Fistula is focused on the theme of “Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula Worldwide.” This theme emphasizes the urgent need to address obstetric fistula comprehensively, including equitable access to quality maternal health services, social reintegration, and sustained investment in healthcare systems.
