Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State says the recent arrival of 60-megawatt gas turbines marks a major milestone in the state’s drive toward reliable electricity supply, assuring citizens that the development will cut household costs, attract investment, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.
The governor made the remark in a statewide broadcast on Wednesday to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary and Bayelsa’s 29th statehood anniversary.
Diri described the twin celebrations as “a cause for gratitude and renewal,” stressing that self-determination and the capacity of Bayelsans to “make our own decisions, set our own course and run our own race” remain reasons for celebration.
He outlined ongoing infrastructure projects, including the nine-storey State Secretariat complex, which he said would provide “modern, efficient administrative space for public service,” and a 25,000-capacity Olympic-standard stadium to boost youth and sports development.
On education, the governor lauded Bayelsa’s recent ranking among the top five states in the country in NECO results, crediting the achievement to investments in science, technical and vocational colleges across all local government areas. Facilities in Ayamasa, Ofoni, Swali, Sampou and Opume are already functional, with others nearing completion in Brass, Igbeta-Ewoma and Oporoma.
Diri thanked citizens for their support, which he said has made progress possible, and pledged that his “Government of Assured Prosperity” remains committed to the rule of law, peace, and security.
“As we reflect on our history and look ahead, let us renew our collective commitment to unity, hard work and the careful stewardship of our shared resources,” he said.
The governor while wishing Nigerians and Bayelsans a peaceful and joyful celebration, assured that “together, by unity of purpose and steadfast labour, we shall turn our renewed expectation into lasting progress.”
