As the world marks World Cancer Day on February 4, 2026, Dr. Ayibatari Agiri, a medical doctor at the Diete Koki Memorial Hospital, Yenagoa says cancer is not a death sentence if detected early and properly managed.
In an interview with our correspondent, Dr. Agiri explained that once cancer is confirmed through diagnosis, treatment options such as chemotherapy and other medical interventions can help either eliminate the disease or significantly slow its progression.
She noted that while untreated cancer can be fatal, early treatment can allow patients to live longer and even die from natural causes rather than cancer itself.
Dr. Agiri listed common symptoms of cancer to include unexplained weight loss and anaemia, and advised the public to maintain a positive mindset, seek prompt medical diagnosis, and avoid relying on unverified advice. She stressed the need for regular hospital visits and professional medical guidance.
Commenting on this year’s theme, “United by Unique,” Dr. Agiri described cancer as a chronic disease that requires long-term treatment and substantial financial commitment.
She appealed to government to strengthen the health insurance system, while urging relatives of cancer patients to remain supportive and strictly follow medical advice to improve treatment outcomes.
