The Bayelsa State Government has confirmed the death of Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 60.

The announcement was made in a statement signed by Hon. (Mrs.) Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy. She said Senator Ewhrudjakpo collapsed while heading to a scheduled meeting in his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, where doctors later confirmed him dead.

According to the statement, the late Deputy Governor had been active and performing his official duties earlier in the day before the incident occurred.

The government described his death as a painful loss to the state and the nation, noting that he served Bayelsa with dedication, as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Senator representing Bayelsa West, and, since 2020, Deputy Governor.

According to the statement Governor Douye Diri has extended condolences to Barr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, the late Deputy Governor’s wife, their children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, the Ofoni Federated Community, former Governor Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and all Bayelsans.

In honour of his memory, Governor Diri has declared a three-day State Mourning beginning today, Friday, December 12, 2025, with all flags to be flown at half-mast.

The statement added that the governor also prayed for God’s comfort for the family and the people of Bayelsa State.
