The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has passed the Security Trust Fund, Repeal and Re-enactment Bill, 2025, for its second reading.
The bill which was sponsored by Dr. Monday Obolo, Leader of the House, and seconded by Hon. Living Meeting, member representing Ekeremor Constituency 2, cited the constitutional responsibility of government to secure lives and property of the people, adding that no meaningful development can strive devoid of security.
Dr. Obolo, praised Governor Douye Diri for prioritizing the safety of the people, noting that the bill which is expanded if passed, will be funded not only by government but corporate bodies and others.
Speaking in support of the bill, Hon. Douglas Awudulu, member representing Nembe Constituency 3, and Hon. Selekaye Victor, member representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 4, explained that the bill if signed into law will curb proliferation of small arms, promote security, woo investors, and increase revenue strengthen the state’s provision of security equipment.
Hon. Bernard Kenebai, member representing Sagbama Constituency 2, and Hon. Tari Porri, member representing Ekeremor Constituency 1, lauded Governor Diri for installing Close-Circuit Televisions, CCTVs, in the state and also taking measures for the quick release of Justice Ebieyerin Umokoro.
Stressing on the significant of the bill, the lawmakers said the bill outlines corporate bodies and others to fund the security trust fund and be managed by qualified personnel. And also, if passed will reduce insecurity to the minimal.
The bill was referred to the House Committees on Security, Finance and Appropriation to report back in one week.
