The Albinism Association of Nigeria, AAN has called on the Federal Government to fully implement the commitments it made at the 2025 Global Disability Summit held in Berlin, Germany.
The appeal was made during a one-day media roundtable on Wednesday held at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Yenagoa, themed: Promoting Dialogue on Nigeria’s Post-Global Disability Summit (GDS) 2025 Commitment and Advocacy.
Speaking to newsmen after the event, Dr. Bisi Bamishe, Executive Director of the Albinism Association of Nigeria, urged the media to use their platforms to advocate for the implementation of the Summit’s pledges. She also called for the inclusion of skin cancer treatment under the National Health Insurance Scheme for persons with albinism.
Also speaking, Mrs. Ogbogene Joy, Chairperson of AAN in Bayelsa State, lamented the lack of response from the state government to requests for courtesy visits. She urged the government to engage and carry persons with albinism along in its programmes and policies.
On his part, Chief Nengi James, Patron of AAN and Second Vice President of the Ijaw National Congress, INC, decried the marginalization of persons with albinism. He appealed to the Bayelsa State Government to ensure their inclusion, particularly in political appointments.
In a show of solidarity, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Bayelsa State Council represented by Dr. Inebaraton Preye, the Vice Chairman, assured the Association of the Council’s readiness to collaborate in amplifying their challenges and achievements.
