As the world marks International Albinism Awareness Day on June 13, a day, established by the United Nations in 2014 that calls for an end to color-based discrimination, stigma and myths against persons with albinism, advocates say the focus must shift from appearance to dignity, rights, and mental well-being.

The United Nations is linking this year’s theme, Proudly In My Skin: Celebrating All Skin Tones, to a new report on the psychosocial impact of discrimination on people with albinism worldwide.

Speaking of color-based stigma and discrimination, Mrs. Joy Ogbogene, Bayelsa state Albinism association chairperson says persons with albinism deserve equal rights and respect. She also sends a strong call to end prejudice and embrace every skin tone.

Amplifying her voice, Mrs Veronica Tulle, Financial Secretary, Bayelsa Albinism association says, Albinism is genetic and not a curse stating that every skin tone deserves respect. She’s demanding inclusion for persons with albinism in Nigeria and beyond.

Both women also addressed misconceptions about persons with disabilities, stressing that stigma and false beliefs only deepen exclusion. They urged Nigerians to choose facts over myths, and respect over discrimination.

In line with the 2026 International Albinism Awareness day theme, proudly in my skin, citizens are urged to take action, challenge harmful myths and jokes, speak up against discrimination in schools, workplaces, communities, and protect the skin of persons with albinism by making sunscreen and protective clothing accessible, and above all, recognize their full humanity and rights as we are all proudly in our skin.
