A concerned resident of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital who identified himself as Comrade Alabo has raised the alarm over alleged unhealthy food processing practices in the state.
Comrade Alabo, in an interview with our correspondent on Monday, alleged that some food vendors use paracetamol tablets to cook meat in order to soften it for consumption.
He said the claim was brought to his attention by a food vendor after he complained about the difficulty in softening meat during cooking.
The resident also expressed concern over the alleged use of detergent in fermenting fufu, a cassava-based staple widely consumed in the state. He noted that while reports of such practices are in the public domain, they require urgent attention due to their potential health risks.
Comrade Alabo called on the government and relevant regulatory agencies, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC to establish a whistleblowing platform that would enable members of the public to report such incidents.
He added that decisive action is necessary to safeguard public health and ensure food safety standards are upheld.
