The Bayelsa State Government has welcomed Madam Gill Lever, the Deputy Commissioner at the British High Commission, to the state on Thursday.
Madam Lever was received by Governor Douye Diri and members of the State Cabinet during its Security Council meeting. Her visit is to assess the British Government–funded “Brighter Futures” programme, a crime prevention initiative being implemented in partnership with the Bayelsa State Government.
Speaking during the visit, the Deputy High Commissioner said the programme is aimed at curbing cultism and illicit drug abuse at the grassroots, as well as rehabilitating vulnerable youths by equipping them with vocational skills for sustainable livelihoods.
In his remarks, Hon. Alfred Nimizigha, the Commissioner for Youth Development, whose ministry is facilitating the programme on behalf of the state government, commended the governor for his support, noting that the initiative has exceeded the expectations of the British High Commission.
He added that the programme has focused on agriculture and skills development to empower young people across the state.
