Dr. Peter Akpe has been sworn in as the sixth Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. Dr. Akpe, who replaces the late Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, was administered the oath of office by Justice Matilda Ayemieye, Chief Judge of the state, at the Government House in Yenagoa on Wednesday February 25, 2026.
He was sworn in after the Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed him as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State on Tuesday.
Also sworn in was Madam Joanah Gigi as Commissioner for Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development. Her appointment follows the death of the former Commissioner, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei, in December 2024.
Similarly, 18 newly appointed Permanent Secretaries also took their oaths of office during the ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Governor Douye Diri noted that Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the late former Deputy Governor, who died on Thursday, December 11, was accorded a full state burial. He thanked stakeholders across the state for their unity and cooperation during the period of mourning.
The governor said that after prayerful consideration, he forwarded Dr. Akpe’s name to the House of Assembly, which he commended for its swift confirmation. He described the development as being in line with the provisions of the Constitution of Nigeria as amended.
Governor Diri said he sought a deputy with competence, character and a strong sense of faith, qualities he found in Dr. Akpe. He assured the new Deputy Governor of his full support and expressed confidence that he would be a dependable partner in delivering on the administration’s promises to the people.
He urged Dr. Akpe to remain mindful of the oath of office and to discharge his duties with honour, empathy and a commitment to the overall well-being of the state.
