Dr. Ebidimie Divine Irole, a pediatric specialist from the Department of Child Medicine at the Federal Medical Center, FMC, Yenagoa, has emphasized that parents and guardians can help children with Autism reach their full potential through early detection and proper training.
Dr. Irole made this statement during an appearance on Let’s Talk Nigeria, Golden FM 97.5 morning show on Wednesday. Her discussion was aimed to raising awareness about Autism as the world commemorates World Autism Awareness Day.
The Theme for this year’s Autism Day is “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals”
Speaking during the programme, she clarified that Autism is a non-contagious developmental condition and urged the public to treat children with Autism with the same respect and dignity as neurotypical children.
While the exact causes of Autism remain scientifically unproven, Dr. Irole noted that some theories suggest genetic factors or exposure to harmful chemicals during pregnancy may contribute to the condition.
The medical expert who stressed that every child with Autism has the right to education and quality healthcare also called on urban planners to consider the needs of children with Autism when designing cities to ensure inclusivity.
Dr. Irole dismissed the misconception that Autism is linked to spiritual possession and called for support for affected children.
