As the world observes this year’s International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, health practitioners and some residents of Bayelsa state are urging government at all levels to play an active role in combating this harmful practice.
Speaking with Cynthia Okolobi, Golden FM’s correspondent, Dr. Sese Suobomodei Ayibatari described the female genital mutilation as a harmful practice that could lead to death.
He explained some of the complications and infections attached to female genital mutilation and how it has no health benefits but poses a huge risk to women who undergo the process.
Dr. Ayibatari highlighted a World Health Organization study that associates the practice with higher risks of childbirth complications and maternal mortality and how it poses significant health risks.
Dr Ayibatari further urged the government to create legislations criminalizing the act, and also partnering with Non-Governmental Organisations in creating awareness campaigns in communities and meaningfully engaging traditional, religious and opinion leaders to sensitize everyone at the grassroot level.
Also speaking with our correspondent were two victims of female genital mutilation, Mrs. Martha Afiamowei and Miss Favour McDonald who recounted their painful experience during and after the process.
