Dr. Tonye Okio, the Federal Commissioner representing Bayelsa State at the Federal Character Commission, has expressed concern over the low turnout of Bayelsans in the ongoing nationwide recruitment exercise of the Nigeria Police Force in Yenagoa.
Dr. Okio spoke on Monday 9, while featuring on Golden FM’s Pepper Soup Zone programme. He said although over 2,000 applicants from Bayelsa had registered for the recruitment exercise, fewer than 50 candidates turned up on the first day of the screening.
The commissioner, who attributed the low turnout to lack of awareness, warned that failure of qualified applicants from the state to participate in the exercise could lead to Bayelsa losing its allotted slots to other states with higher participation.
According to him, the recruitment exercise is expected to last for six weeks, urging applicants to check their email to confirm their scheduled screening dates and ensure they attend.
Also speaking on the programme, Architect Stella Raine, the Deputy Chairman of Police Community Relations Committee zone 16, also encouraged qualified youths in the state who had applied to take advantage of the opportunity and participate in the screening.
Data from the recruitment shows that Bayelsa ranks among the states with the lowest number of applicants, recording 2,430 applications. Lagos record 2,448 applicants while Ebonyi and Anambra States recorded 1,667 and 1,739 applicants.
