The Bayelsa State Vigilante Service has arrested two suspected pickpockets operating within Yenagoa metropolis, following credible intelligence and sustained surveillance by personnel of the service.

A statement by Service explained that in the early hours of Monday, operatives stationed at the Tombia–Etegwe Roundabout apprehended one Emmanuel Oweibena aged 21, from Sagbama Local Government Area, and Charles Francis aged 21, from Amarata in Yenagoa Local Government Area.

According to the statement preliminary investigations reveal that the duo operated as a syndicate, using a commercial tricycle as a means to perpetrate their criminal activities. One suspect allegedly drove the tricycle while the other posed as a passenger. Together, they targeted unsuspecting commuters, dispossessing them of mobile phones, cash, and other valuables within the Yenagoa axis.

The statement said the arrest was made possible after a victim, who had previously been robbed along the Melford Okilo Expressway late last year, provided vital information that aided its operatives in tracking and apprehending the suspects.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to engaging in the criminal act for several years as a means of livelihood. In line with established security protocols, the statement informed that the suspects have been handed over to Operation Doo Akpo of the Nigerian Police Force, Bayelsa State Command, for further investigation and prosecution.

The statement added that the Bayelsa State Vigilante Service under the leadership of Hon. Doubiye Alagba as chairman, remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state. It also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to security agencies to enable them sustain the ongoing fight against crime.
