The Bayelsa State Government has directed the immediate suspension of the implementation of an alleged new school fees policy at the state-owned Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Amassoma.

The directive was contained in a government special announcement signed by Dr. Gentle Emelah the Commissioner for Education, on Thursday.

The government advised the university management and students to continue with their usual academic activities, while maintaining order and ensuring peace on the campus.

It also urged the students and management to shun any acts capable of causing rancour or chaos within and around the university environment.

Recalled that students of NDU, on Thursday took to major roads on the campus to protest an alleged hike in tuition fees from N110,000 to N319,000 from newly admitted students.

Earlier, Mr. Idoni Ingezi, the NDU Public Relations Officer, said the increase would not affect old or returning students, but only newly admitted students. He appealed to the public and students to remain calm and engage the university management in dialogue.
