President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration who plan to contest in the 2027 elections to step down from their positions on or before March 31.

The directive was made public on Tuesday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, which said the move is in line with provisions of the Electoral Act and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries.

The order affects ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, and personal assistants. It also covers heads of federal agencies, including directors-general and chief executive officers of government commissions, parastatals, and government-owned companies.

According to the government, affected officials are expected to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office before the deadline.

The presidency said the decision is aimed at ensuring a fair electoral process and strengthening democratic practice ahead of the 2027 general elections.
